Obituary for Peter Wylie

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Peter Harvey Wylie in his 93rd year, with his family at his side, on April 19th, 2022 at St. Lawrence Lodge.

Peter is survived by his loving wife and soulmate of 68 years, Mary (McCreary Davidson Campbell), and his 2 cherished daughters, Karen Mahon and Arlene Buckley (Tom Shaw). He will be greatly missed by his 3 grandsons, Trevor Buckley (Amanda) of Windsor, Nova Scotia, Nicholas Mahon (Joel Becker) of Barrhaven, and Taylor Mahon of Rockland. He was also the very proud great grandfather of Emma, Wylie, Leah, and Abby Buckley. He also leaves behind his nephews, Scott Parkinson (Mary Ellen Martinak) and Harvey Wylie, as well as many treasured cousins in Canada and Scotland. Peter was predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Elizabeth (Harvey) Wylie, his sister Nora Parkinson, and his brother Joseph Wylie.

Peter was born in Coatbridge, Scotland and was raised in the small village of Glenmavis. He attended Airdrie Academy until the age of 16 and then worked at a foundry where he undertook a 5-year electrical apprenticeship and attended night school. At the age of 21, he entered the Royal Navy. He served as Petty Officer on the aircraft carrier HMS Perseus for 2 years. While on shore leave, he met his future wife, Mary Campbell at a spring dance. Upon leaving the Navy, he took a job at Scottish Cables, and taught math at night school. Peter and Mary married in June of 1954, and emigrated to Canada (Brockville) shortly thereafter, following the lead of his brother and sister who lived in western Ontario. He was employed by Phillips Cables as an engineer, moving to operations for several years, and eventually to management, retiring as Vice President in 1989. Except for a short 2-year transfer to the Winnipeg office, his entire Phillips career was spent in Brockville. He was very proud of, and cherished his Phillips Cables family, and enjoyed meeting and chatting with his former colleagues all through his retirement.

He was an avid cricketer and soccer player in his early days in Canada, enjoyed golf and curling for many years, and developed lifelong friendships with many of his teammates. He was a member of the congregation of First Presbyterian Church in Brockville, and served there in many capacities over the years. He enjoyed travelling and he and Mary enjoyed many fabulous vacations together. In retirement, he developed a passion for genealogy. He researched his family tree, discovered, reached out to, and developed wonderful connections with many distant cousins.

He was a very conscientious and hard-working man, but also a fun-loving, gregarious friend, and a wonderful entertainer. Most importantly, he was a most dedicated, caring, and nurturing family man, always providing a safe haven, encouragement and support, and unconditional love to his entire family. On hearing of his death, one of his new-found distant cousins remarked, “It is funny how someone you have actually only spent a small number of days with in person can hold such a special place in your heart”. He certainly was a man who many called friend, and who treasured his friends and family above all else. He will be forever missed, never forgotten, and always cherished.

The family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Wedgewood Retirement Home, and most especially to the very dedicated staff on Oak Lodge at St. Lawrence Lodge. They are very special people, and the care and respect they accord to the residents entrusted to them was reflected in the smiles and twinkle in the eye they were able to elicit from Peter as they strove to make each day happy for him.

Cremation and committal have taken place, a private celebration of Peter’s life is planned for the future. In memoriam donations to First Presbyterian Church, Brockville, or St. Lawrence Lodge (Oak Lodge) would be gratefully acknowledged by the family.
Send condolences or share a special thought of Peter on the Memory Wall above
