Obituary

The heavy hearts of Wendy, Sarah (Andrew Chadwick), James, Gavin and Matthew, share the sad news of the loss of our Husband, Father and Grandfather, Peter Edsell Lewis.
After beating cancer 4 years previously, Peter succumbed to a second, more aggressive cancer on June 29th 2019. Peter was able to be surrounded by his family and dear friends at the end and leaves behind a legacy of strength of character, community engagement and love of life that those who knew him will always cherish.
In Wendy (nee Hutton) he found his love for life and his rudder for direction. His greatest dance partner for more than 50 years, their marriage was a true testament to love, understanding and strength and leaves an indelible mark on anyone who witnessed that over the years.
Peter’s life was a testament to doing what’s right. He faithfully served his clients as an agent for Sun Life, was a stalwart supporter of the community, participated in many charitable organizations including Rotary, Kinsmen, DBIA and others all for the betterment of the City of Brockville.
He delighted in his children and was strongly engaged in their lives growing up. Between swim meets, karate and guitar lessons, band concerts, Bingo Fundraisers and summers at the cottage, Peter ensured Sarah and James were given every opportunity for an amazing life and also the tools to build their own as they grew up.
His Grandchildren hold a special place in his heart and he in theirs. Fewer things delighted him more than talking golf with Gavin and Matthew.
Peter also leaves behind a sister Margaret (Ken Green), In-laws Richard Hutton, Ulla Mueller, and Betty and Glen Pearce and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his Parents Helen and Ken Lewis of Belleville ON.
The family would like to thank the tremendous care from the Kingston Cancer Centre, specifically Dr. J. Franklin and Dr. Zaza as well as the Brockville Palliative Care Unit. The care and personal involvement with Peter’s fight with cancer over the past 4 years was remarkable and much appreciated.
Per Peter’s wishes there will not be a service, those wishing to make a memorial donation can direct them to the Canadian Cancer Society or the Brockville Hospital Foundation Palliative Care Unit.

I am completely saddened by the loss of a great man. Peter is the reason I became a financial advisor. He was always an ear, full of wisdom and kindness. His infamous “to play devils advocate” line will be the phrase I will continue to use. I remember him saying it knowing he was always likely to stir the pot!!! I will miss him and miss having him check in on me from time to time. My sincere condolences to Wendy and children.

I enjoyed community projects and Kinsmen with Peter who was a community builder extrodinaire for Brockville. Cancer is a terrible scourge and we must continue to support groundbreaking research to defeat it. Condolences to family and friends. RIP Peter.

I first met Peter when he was in Kinsmen with my dad in the 60's. Peter and Wendy were friends of my parents. As I grew up Peter and I also became friends, a friendship that continues today. I saw Peter at Christmas ringing the bell and we spoke for a few minutes catching up on what had transpired since we last chatted. Peter was an awesome man. He was a good friend of our family. I will miss Peter. My deepest condolences to Wendy and the children.

Wendy, Sarah, James, and family,
We were heartbroken to read of Peter's passing, and I am happy I was able to see him at KGH only weeks before.
His obituary attests to his faithfulness to his clients, and we can certainly back that up with our experience; Sheila had her insurance policy with Mutual, and after we were married in 1972, Peter called us, and I was not looking forward to any appointments with an Insurance Agent at that young age.
Well, Peter won me over; he was a true professional and we dealt with only him throughout the years, until he retired. When I sold real estate in Brockville, we traded names of clients, this being beneficial to both of us.
During my years of real estate sales (1974 - 1982), and time in the travel agent field (2013 - present), I have consciously tried to emulate his sales techniques (knowledge, honesty, trust, superb follow-up, does what he says he will do, and a genuine concern for his clients and family).
One of the downfalls of having known Peter, is that we have always judged salespeople by him, especially insurance agents, and we have only found his equal a few times (a handful), but never again in Insurance!
We have always admired his strength of character, willpower, love of family, and total honesty!
I met Wendy in 1969, when we both were at Brockville General Hospital, in the nursing field, and it has always been my pleasure knowing her! It was great to see her and Ann Dixon at Peter's bedside at KGH!
Sheila and I extend the sincerest of condolences to Wendy, Sarah and James, and family, and hope that you will be comforted by the memories of a truly wonderful guy!
