Grandmere
Ca brise ma coeur que vous été pris si soudainement. J'aurais aimé pouvoir te revoir
une fois de plus. Je te manques beaucoup and je t’aime.
For most of my life, I did my schooling in French immersion. I think this was something my parents
put my brother and I into because they wanted us to be able to communicate with my grandparents.
Fortunately for us, both of my grandparents are more than competent at speaking English, so it was
really more of a novelty than a necessity. It does bring me joy knowing that that part of my heritage
is inside of me and it actually served me well for the years I worked in Montreal. In Quebec people
will continue to speak French to you (or at you), regardless of whether or not you are speaking
French or not.
I grew up living hours away from Grandma and Pop and then would later move across the country
for university and finally across the world to settle in New Zealand. No matter where I was in the
world my grandma found me with a card when I needed it the most.
I think I always overestimated grandma’s skills with technology and unfortunately this meant that
we weren’t able to catch up via video chats as much as we both probably would have liked. I’m
eternally grateful that we were able to see each other a few weeks ago with the help of Aunt Lisa
and that both Grandma and Pop were able to see my daughter, their great-granddaughter running
around and playing in the park while we talked.
Although I live on the other side of the world, I’ve never truly felt as isolated and alone, as I did when
I got the news about my grandmother. Knowing it was only a couple of flights to get back home
made the distance seem manageable but this past year watching my Pop get sick and knowing that I
couldn’t come home to see him has broken my heart. I think I always assumed that Grandma would
be around forever and that I would at least get to see her when I could travel again. I’m sending all
of my love to the family back home and hope that where ever Grandma is, that she is at peace. Je
t’aime grandmere. I love you.
Katherine
