Mary Ross Comstock
August 2, 1939 – June 27, 2020

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Mary Lesley Ross Comstock on June 27, 2020. Mary was the beloved mother of Missy (Shawn) whom she adored, and was Nanny to the loves of her life, Maddie and Evan. She was deeply loved by her sisters Jane and Joy and her many nieces and nephews. Mary will also be greatly missed by her dear friends, colleagues and the BCI “50’s“ girls. She was predeceased by her parents Herbert and Phyllis Wooding.

Mary’s life was music. She was an instrumental and vocal teacher with the local school board, an accomplished pianist and accompanist, songwriter, and the Star of the very first music Festival in Brockville. In 2009 she was inducted into the Brockville and Area Music and Performing Arts Hall of Fame.

She will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate to have been a part of her many musical and artistic endeavours including the Brockville Concert Band, the Brockville Police Choir, the Brockville Operatic Society, the Brockville Theatre Guild, and the Belles of St. Mary Choir. Wonderful memories were made working with Peter Lynch, Terry O’Reilly and other talented local performers over the years. Her collaborations with her dear friend A.J. Benoit also held a special place in her heart.

In addition to music, Mary loved to paint, play bridge, garden, golf, and spend time with her beloved cats.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James Street East, Brockville. Internment will be at Oakland Cemetery with family by her side. Once restrictions have been eased, a celebration will be held to honour the best of Mary’s life.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Ontario SPCA Leeds and Grenville Animal Centre will be gratefully acknowledged.

Please take a moment to send a message of condolence to the family or share a special thought of Mary on the Memory Wall above. Thank you.

Mary was a very good friend with whom I had many discussions about 'The Arts' in Brockville and area. Though I never performed with her, I did manage to photograph her in performance from time to time. This is from the 2016 Palliative Care Telethon, where she was Musical Director and Arranger for Terry O'Reilly.

Warm of heart, gentle spirit, gracious, and giving. That is how I will remember my friend.

I was so very saddened to hear of Mary's passing. I was fortunate enough to have the priviledge of working with Mary on a few shows with AJ Benoit in the past couple of years which I enjoyed very much. We had so much fun together. Mary was such a professional to work with and I truly hoped we would have the opportunity to work with each other again. She also came out several times with her friends to support my band which a great deal to me. She will be missed by so many but never forgotten. My condolenses to Missy, Shawn, Maddie, Evan, Jane and Joy. My thoughts are with you at this very difficult time. Sue Baker

Mary, how did we love you?
Let me count the ways: mother, grandmother, wife, sister, mother-in-law, aunt, friend, musical legend, confidante, mentor, teacher, role model, gardener, artist, animal lover, beautiful, full of grace, patience and good humour.
We miss your warm and wonderful smile, and will forever miss YOU.

My deepest sympathies to the family. Mary impacted me from an early age. She was my grade 5 teacher and still a measure of excellence I compare others to. I have nothing but wonderful memories of this beautiful person and hope her memory will serve her family well in the years to come.

We extend our deepest sympathy to Missy, Joy, Jane and families. Terry and I were privileged to have Mary as a friend and piano teacher and also worked with her in various musical productions. I was so thrilled when she invited me to join the Belles. Her gift of music has deeply enriched our lives and the wonderful memories of the times we shared will live in our hearts forever.
