Obituary for Laura Leona Noonan (Porteous)

Noonan, Laura (nee Porteous).

Passed away at Brockville General on July 3rd, 2019, at the age of 92. Survived by sons Bob Jr. and Nick (Connie), grandchildren Jamie Lynn Noonan and Rebecca Rose Noonan, and many relatives. Predeceased by her husband Robert Richard Noonan and siblings Mildred, Neil, Agnes and Bruce and by her parents Norman Porteous and Jean Moffatt.
Laura grew up near Winchester, Ontario and lived on the family dairy farm which has been owned and operated by the Porteous family for over 130 years. A farm girl at heart, she loved to go back, even in her 90s.Laura was well known for her fiery spirit, infectious laugh and caring nature. She loved to go for walks, especially by the river trails, and had a sense of adventure to try new things such as going on a hot air balloon ride. In earlier days she enjoyed golf and cheering on her sons during sporting events. She was a care-giver by heart and graduated from nursing school in 1947. Her first jobs were at Brockville General, Brockville Psychiatric and Welland General. From 1950 until 1983 she worked part and full time at St. Vincent De Paul, mostly in the Emergency Department. She then continued as a Diabetic Nurse Educator until 1992. Laura did continue to volunteer at the Canadian Diabetes Association for 14 years after retirement from nursing. Her volunteering was part of 'who she was' and was at the local St. John's Ambulance branch for many years serving as the board chair for 7 years. She was awarded the Commander Within the Order on May 5th, 2001. She also gave many hours at the Red Cross, United Way and was part of the Ladies Auxiliary for the Brockville Minor Hockey Association in the 1970s. She also loved to learn, from learning French to getting a degree through correspondence. With the help of courses from Ottawa University, Queens and the University of Waterloo she received her BScN in 1993. Laura was also a member of both St. John Bosco and St. Francis Xavier Church.

The family would like to thank the staff at both Brockville General and the 2nd floor of Chartwell-Wedgewood for their patience and care.
