Obituary for Ron Helmer

Peacefully entered into rest at St. Lawrence Lodge on Wednesday August 3rd 2022 at the age of 87 years. Beloved husband of Jean (Arber -Nolan) for 32 years.
Proud Dad to Wendy Onstein (Charles), Grandfather of Brad, (Kaylee), Carrie (Will) and great grandson James.
He is survived by Jean’s children, Graham, Lloyd, Mark, Terry, Sandy and Blair as well as Tom McMillian Sheila Hunter. He was a special Grandpa to Lesley, Ryan, Sarah, Shannon, and Robin. Loving Bumpa to Liam. He also leaves many nieces and nephews.
Loved brother of Joan Burns (Bob), Donnie (Peggy), Sharyn Manley, and Gary (Heather). Brother-in-law to Barry (Margaret) and Tony (Val) Arber.
Ron was predeceased by his sister Iris and brother-in-law Ron Gardiner and his brother-in-law Phil Manley and by Wendy’s mother Margaret Weir.
Ron was born on March 1st 1935 to Milton and Alice Helmer in Cornwall. He resided in the village of Newington until the age of 16 when he went to work for Patterson’s Steam Ship Lines on the St. Lawrence River and the great lakes. For a short period of time, he worked for Woolworth’s Department Stores in Ottawa and then Brockville. In 1960 he secured employment at Automatic Electric. Starting at the bottom and working his way up through the ranks. He had a full and rewarding career there and developed many friendships.
He commenced a second career at Irvine’s Funeral Home where he truly enjoyed working with families as they grieved their loss. He became a valued member of the Irvine team. He loved this work so much he stayed until just after his 80th birthday.
One of his proudest accomplishments was the role that he played in the building of the Wall Street Village. From vision, fundraising and construction he volunteered hours of his time and talent to see the project to completion.
Family and friends may call at Irvine Memorial Chapel and Reception Centre at Roselawn, 2451 County Rd 15, Maitland, Ontario on Wednesday August 10th, 2022. Visitation will be from 10am to 12pm. Celebration of Life at 12 PM followed by interment and reception.
Donations are respectfully requested to St. Lawrence Lodge 3rd floor activation Cedar unit. The family wish to thank the nurses and staff at St. Lawrence Lodge for their care and kindness provided to Ron and his family.
