Dr. David Cameron Bryer, O.D.

It is with deep sadness that the Bryer family announces the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother and uncle David Cameron Bryer.

David passed peacefully on August 24, 2022 at Maple View Lodge in Athens Ontario after a lengthy battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s disease.

David is survived by his wife of 51 years, Maureen (McPhaden), and daughters Shannon Bryer and Carly Howe (Patrick). He was a proud and doting grandfather to his three grandchildren Quinn Howe (13), Wyatt Taylor (12) and Molly Howe (11). Loving brother to Richard (Karen) and brother-in-law to Shirley (Lorne) and Harvey (Alana). David is also survived by his many nieces and a nephew. He is predeceased by his parents Roy and Ellen (Patterson) Bryer.

David was born in Russell Manitoba on March 1, 1947 and raised on a farm with the support of many aunts and uncles in the community. Growing up, David was an excellent student winning many provincial academic awards. He was also an avid athlete and competed in many school sports including track and field (sprinting) and basketball. David ventured east to Ontario for his post-secondary education and attended the University Of
Waterloo School Of Optometry where he graduated in 1969.

Shortly after graduation David began practicing in Winnipeg when an opportunity to purchase and run his own practice brought him and his new wife Maureen to Brockville Ontario in 1971. There, David became an active member of the community. He and Maureen became members of the Brockville Country Club where they curled. David also enjoyed playing slo-pitch and even learned to play ice and floor hockey which he enjoyed for many years. Later, David developed a love of golf as his main hobby, spending many hours on the Brockville Country Club course as well as road-tripping with good friends.

In addition to his love of sports David enjoyed being active in the community and with his professional association. He spent 20 years involved with the College of Optometry council, including 6 years on the executive. David was also involved with the Kinsmen Club of Brockville and served on the Brockville Country Club board for many years including the role of President for a period.

David’s family expresses their gratitude to the wonderful staff at Maple View Lodge in Athens, Ontario for their compassionate and supportive care of David who spent his final years there.

A celebration of life for David will take place at the Brockville Country Club, 1548 King Street West, Brockville on Sunday, May 7th, 2023 from 1 - 4 pm.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Lanark Leeds Grenville to support their research in Dementia with Lewy Bodies in David’s memory.
