Daniel George Wheeler

Owner of Wheeler’s Independent Grocer and 1998 Brockville Citizen of the Year, passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Brockville General Hospital, Garden St. Site on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at the age of 80 years, beloved husband of Jenny (Koelmans). Daniel (Dan) is survived by his three sons, Andrew (Denise), Steven (Jyneen) and Robert (Laurie). Cherished ‘Poppa’ of Katelyn, Cale, Nathaniel, Hannah and Rachel. Also survived by his brother Brian Wheeler and sisters Nancy Yingling, Brenda Miller and Carol Angstadt, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dan was predeceased by brothers Vince, Fred, David, Ray and Frank; and sisters Andrea, Anne, Kathleen and Irene.

Dan was well known in the community for his generosity and kindness. He will be remembered as the ‘Friendly Grocer’ who provided that ‘first job’ for countless young people in Brockville. Dan was on the Board of Directors at the former St. Vincent de Paul Hospital and was a dedicated member, and past president, of the Rotary Club of Brockville. A successful business man, Dan's tireless work ethic and endless spirit for giving back to the community and persons in need positively impacted the lives of all who knew him.

Dan was a graduate of St. Lawrence High School in Cornwall where he starred in football and track and field. His passion for sports remained with him throughout his life and, regardless of whether he was playing or watching, never missed an opportunity to share a laugh. He developed a passion for genealogy and enjoyed sharing stories from generations past that will remain with us to be passed down to future generations. He especially loved spending time with family and friends including gatherings at his home on The River ("The Point"), adventures at the hunt camp, and trips to cheer on the Mountaineers.

We will always remember and cherish your laugh and wit that would brighten our days along with your unending generosity, kind heart, and love for family. We can't thank you enough for being the wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend that you were and will always be.

We would like to thank the BGH Palliative Care team for the care and compassion they provided Dan in his final days.

A memorial Mass will take place at St. Francis Xavier Church, 66 Church Street, Brockville on Saturday, October 17, 2020 at 10 am.

Covid protocols will be in place and pre-registration of attendance is required. RSVP below or call our office at 613-342-2828.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Operation Harvest Sharing (Food Bank) or the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation Palliative Care will be gratefully acknowledged.

Please take a moment to send a message of condolence to the family or share a special thought of Dan on the Memory Wall above. Thank you.

Dan will be missed by everyone who knew him. My condolences to his family. Dan sponsored me at my confirmation (1960, give or take a year) and that is my earliest clear memory of him. My Dad, Dan and I were standing in front of the St. Columban's rectory and the Bishop joined us. We all got to kiss the Bishop's ring and Dan gave me a rosary in a leather case. Dan was always there for family.

I was so sorry to hear of Dan's passing. We were both in the Leeds and Grenville Branch of the Ontario Genealogical Society many years ago. Dan was always good to share his finds and knowledge with others at our meetings. My sincere condolences to the family.

Several years ago Dan and I connected as second cousins, once removed. He graciously shared photos and stories from the extended family. Our common ancestors are George Cox and Sarah Kennedy: I through William Cox and he through Alice. I enjoyed our correspondence and was saddened to learn today of his passing last April. Rest in Peace dear cousin! 🙏 Katie Krueger, Eden Prairie Minnesota

I'm thinking about my Uncle Danny this morning, as the family prepares for a COVID era funeral mass next weekend. Danny was such a warm, caring and generous man, funny too, always with a joke or funny story to share. He shared a passion for genealogy with my husband, John, and was always happy to talk family stories and fill in gaps for the tree. He will be sorely missed by family, and friends - there will be another big hole in the fabric of our annual family gathering next year. Rest in peace, Danny ❤️

Dear Jennie and families
On my return from Florida, I just now, received a call from one of our old school chums, who advised me, on the passing, of our very dear and old friend Danny. "We began our schooling at West Front Public School and later SLHS."
You could always count on Danny to be there for us all. "Yes a true leader."
So many wonderful and lasting memories.
My sincerest and heartfelt condolences, to you Jennie, and all your family
God Bless you all
With love
Wayne Morgan
