Daniel George Wheeler

Owner of Wheeler’s Independent Grocer and 1998 Brockville Citizen of the Year, passed away peacefully with family at his side at the Brockville General Hospital, Garden St. Site on Saturday, April 25, 2020, at the age of 80 years, beloved husband of Jenny (Koelmans). Daniel (Dan) is survived by his three sons, Andrew (Denise), Steven (Jyneen) and Robert (Laurie). Cherished ‘Poppa’ of Katelyn, Cale, Nathaniel, Hannah and Rachel. Also survived by his brother Brian Wheeler and sisters Nancy Yingling, Brenda Miller and Carol Angstadt, as well as by numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Dan was predeceased by brothers Vince, Fred, David, Ray and Frank; and sisters Andrea, Anne, Kathleen and Irene.

Dan was well known in the community for his generosity and kindness. He will be remembered as the ‘Friendly Grocer’ who provided that ‘first job’ for countless young people in Brockville. Dan was on the Board of Directors at the former St. Vincent de Paul Hospital and was a dedicated member, and past president, of the Rotary Club of Brockville. A successful business man, Dan's tireless work ethic and endless spirit for giving back to the community and persons in need positively impacted the lives of all who knew him.

Dan was a graduate of St. Lawrence High School in Cornwall where he starred in football and track and field. His passion for sports remained with him throughout his life and, regardless of whether he was playing or watching, never missed an opportunity to share a laugh. He developed a passion for genealogy and enjoyed sharing stories from generations past that will remain with us to be passed down to future generations. He especially loved spending time with family and friends including gatherings at his home on The River ("The Point"), adventures at the hunt camp, and trips to cheer on the Mountaineers.

We will always remember and cherish your laugh and wit that would brighten our days along with your unending generosity, kind heart, and love for family. We can't thank you enough for being the wonderful son, husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, and friend that you were and will always be.

We would like to thank the BGH Palliative Care team for the care and compassion they provided Dan in his final days.

A memorial Mass and celebration of Dan's life will take place at a future date when we can come together to honour his memory. Arrangements entrusted to the Irvine Funeral Home, 4 James Street East, Brockville.

As expressions of sympathy, donations to Operation Harvest Sharing (Food Bank) or the Brockville and District Hospital Foundation Palliative Care will be gratefully acknowledged.

Please take a moment to send a message of condolence to the family or share a special thought of Dan on the Memory Wall above. Thank you.

Very sad to hear of Dan’s passing. I spent many hours with the Wheeler Family and have nothing but fond and fun memories. Dan always had a great sense of humour and was always welcoming to me whenever I was at his home or on a football field trip with the Wheeler boys! My condolences to Steve,Bob, Andy and Jenny and the whole extended Wheeler Family. I know he will be missed.

I am so saddened to hear of Dan’s passing. What an incredible man that we should all learn from his way of life! How many grocery stores do you go into now and even know who the manager is? We have shared many stories, mostly hockey, about my family and his over the years during our professional visits and he always had some great advice! I will remember his smile, his kindness, his love for his family, his respect, compassion and generosity for others. Thinking of all of you during this difficult time.
Sincerely,
Bonnie Hammerli

My deepest Condolences to the Wheeler family. Dan was simply a great guy! He would freely gave his time to help others. When I started my business, Dan went out of his way to help, guide and provide me ongoing advice over many years. Thank you Dan. You will be missed.

What will I remember when I think of Dan? A kind gentleman with a positive outlook who tried to make his world a better place. One particular memory that I have is of many years ago when Dan and I were members of our parish council. It was Christmas and we were tasked with delivering food hampers to needy families. Poor Dan...he had a 100 lb teenage girl to help him lift and lug these food boxes up flights of stairs or into awkward hallways. One place in particular sticks in my mind. We arrived at a door (after wrestling with the cumbersome box) to be greeted by a young mother with a child on her hip. Her face lit up and she opened the door wider to let us in. Dan and I both saw that there was a man certainly capable of getting up to assist us in our task. He never acknowledged us nor made any attempt to help. After placing the hamper where the mother wanted us to, she thanked us profusely and wished us both a Merry Christmas. When Dan and I got back out to his car, I was very quiet. As a young teenager, I hadn't had the experience of imagining a life like that of the young mother/children. All Dan would say was "wasn't it great to see how happy that young woman was to receive our help?". This was the consumate Dan. Choosing not to focus on the negative -- only seeing the positive and sharing that view with an impressionable young lady. Thank you Dan.
To Jenny , Andy, Steve and Bob - my deepest condolences.
